Military service and employment in Algeria: deferment, completion, exemption, what recruiters ask and what to write on the CV

“National-service status”: the line that blocks applications without anyone saying why. Here are the situations, the papers, what employers really look at and how to write it.

For men, national-service status is part of the hiring file in Algeria, in the public sector and in many private companies. Recruiters want to know one simple thing: will you be available in the coming months? This guide explains the possible situations, the supporting documents, and how to present yours without losing opportunities.

Possible situations and their documents

SituationMeaningDocument
CompletedYou performed national service (current length: 12 months)National-service card (the “yellow card”)
DeferredCall-up postponed for studies, until a dateDeferment certificate, renewed each academic year
ExemptPermanent exemption: medical reasons, family breadwinner, or regularised status under measures in forceExemption card or certificate
Awaiting call-up / in orderRegistered, not yet calledRegistration or status certificate issued by the national-service office

Documents are issued by the national-service office of your wilaya (recruitment centre); several procedures are available online through the Ministry of National Defence portal. Keep a scan of your card: it will be requested at every hiring.

What recruiters really check

  • Civil service and exams: a regularised status (completed, exempt or valid deferment) is required in the file. Without the document, the file is incomplete.
  • Public companies and large groups: the card is requested at hiring; a deferred candidate can be hired, but the contract may provide for suspension during service.
  • Private SMEs: the question is mostly practical. A candidate “awaiting call-up” worries them because they fear training someone who will leave. Reassure with facts: foreseeable date, procedures under way, or exemption.
  • Jobs abroad and visas: the national-service card or exemption is often required for the passport and exit authorisations.

What to write on the CV and say at the interview

  1. On the CV, under “Additional information”: “National service: completed”, “exempt”, “deferred until 09/2027” or “in order”. One line, no medical or family detail.
  2. Write nothing false: the card is checked at hiring and a false statement is grounds for termination.
  3. At the interview, if asked: answer in one sentence about availability (“I completed it in 2024”, “my deferment runs until the end of my master’s in June”) and return to the role.
  4. If you are awaiting call-up, say what you are doing: “I requested a status certificate; I can commit to the next twelve months”. Transparency reassures more than silence.

For where this line sits on the CV and the other personal details (photo, age, marital status), see the CV guide for Algeria.

Strategy by situation

  1. 1

    You are completed or exempt

An advantage to display: immediate availability and a complete file. Do not hide it at the bottom of the page.

  2. 2

    You are deferred

Target internships, graduation projects and fixed-term contracts compatible with your studies; state the deferment end date. Many companies hire deferred candidates in tech and services.

  3. 3

    You are awaiting call-up

Request your status certificate, ask the national-service office about timing, and target roles where you can become productive fast. Explain your calendar rather than avoid it.

  4. 4

    You are back from service

Mention it as a period, not a gap: “2025 – 2026: national service”. Skills acquired (discipline, logistics, supervision, driving licence) can appear if they serve the role.

Frequently asked questions

Can an employer refuse a deferred candidate?

In the private sector the employer chooses freely; in practice many hire deferred candidates for internships, fixed-term contracts or compatible roles. In the public sector a valid deferment is a regularised status and the file is admissible.

Should I put my status on the CV?

For men, yes, in one line: recruiters look for it and its absence raises doubts. No medical or family detail.

What happens if I am called up during my contract?

The employment contract is suspended for the duration of service, and you return to your position afterwards. Inform the employer in writing as soon as you receive the call-up order.

Can I take a civil-service exam without having done national service?

Yes if your status is regularised (valid deferment, exemption, justified wait for call-up): the file requires the document, not completion.

Where can I get a certificate quickly?

At your wilaya’s national-service office, or online through the Ministry of National Defence portal for some procedures. Allow for the lead time before the file deadline.
