Video interviews and recruitment tests in Algeria: preparation, tools, pitfalls (2026)

More and more Algerian hiring processes start on a screen: a screening call, an interview on Meet or Teams, an online test. The rules of the classic interview still apply, plus a few that only exist at a distance: the connection, the frame, the time zone and the protection of your data.

Large groups, multinationals, southern companies hiring in the north, start-ups and foreign employers have all adopted the same habit: a first round at a distance before making a candidate travel. The screen does not change what the recruiter is looking for — you can do the job, you will stay, the team will want to work with you — but it adds a technical layer and a few traps. This guide complements the article on interview questions: it covers what is specific to video and to tests.

When interviews happen remotely in Algeria

Remote recruitment took hold for practical reasons more than fashion. It is used mainly in five situations:

  • Screening: a 10- to 20-minute call, by phone or WhatsApp, to check availability, mobility, salary expectations and the consistency of the CV. It is already an interview: answer from a quiet place or suggest another slot.
  • Jobs in the South and on life bases: employers in Hassi Messaoud, Hassi R’Mel or In Amenas hire candidates from Algiers, Oran, Sétif or Constantine. The first round is on video; the trip, often paid for, only comes at the final round.
  • Multinationals and large groups: the manager is sometimes in Paris, Dubai or Istanbul; the process usually includes a local HR interview, a video interview with the manager and a test.
  • Start-ups and tech: an online technical test, then a video interview, sometimes a remote trial day.
  • Foreign employers and the diaspora: the whole process is remote, with extra questions about visas, work permits and time zones.

The formats and what they assess

Lengths are orders of magnitude observed in Algerian hiring processes; each company sets its own.
FormatUsual lengthWhat is assessedHow to prepare

The tools and the settings that matter

The application

Install the exact application named in the invitation, not a web version « for now »: Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Zoom work in the browser, but the app gives steadier sound and avoids camera permissions refused at the last minute. Many Algerian SMEs simply use a WhatsApp video call: it is no less serious, prepare the same way. Skype no longer exists since 5 May 2025: if an invitation still mentions it, ask for a Teams or Meet link. Create your account in advance with your real name and a sober photo, and click the link ten minutes early to get through updates.

Connection and electricity

  • Fibre or ADSL: sit close to the router or plug in a cable. Close downloads and other devices streaming video at the same time.
  • 4G backup: a charged phone with data credit and the hotspot already configured. If the picture freezes, say so, turn off your camera and continue in audio rather than disappearing.
  • Power cuts: in summer and in some wilayas, prefer a charged laptop to a desktop, and keep the app installed on your phone to switch over.
  • The interviewer’s number: ask for it when the appointment is confirmed. In case of failure, a text or a call beats five minutes of silence.

Picture and sound

  • Camera at eye level, laptop raised if needed; look at the lens when you speak, at the screen when you listen.
  • Light on your face (a window or a lamp in front of you), never behind you: backlit, the recruiter only sees a silhouette.
  • Neutral background: a wall, a tidy bookshelf. Virtual backgrounds cut hair and headscarves badly and tire the eye; prefer a real clean background or a light blur.
  • Earphones with a microphone: they remove echo and street noise. Mute when you are not speaking if the environment is noisy.
  • Full interview clothes: the same as in person, at least down to the waist, in plain colours that do not flicker on screen.
  • Phone on silent, computer notifications off, door closed, family warned.

Preparation in 7 steps

  1. 1

D-3: reread the ad and prepare the material

Highlight the five words that recur in the ad and prepare a quantified example for each. Reread your CV line by line: at a distance, the recruiter has it on screen and asks precise questions about dates and figures.

  2. 2

D-2: test the tool in real conditions

Call a relative on the planned application, at the planned time, from the planned seat. Check sound, picture, the light at that hour, the displayed name and the profile photo.

  3. 3

D-1: prepare documents and the backup

CV as PDF, diplomas and certificates scanned in a folder ready to share or send, the ad printed, notebook and pen. Charge the computer and the phone; set up the hotspot; write down the recruiter’s number.

  4. 4

    H-1: set up the desk

Close every window except the app and your notes. A glass of water off camera. Warn the household. Reread your three main examples and your net salary range, worked out with the gross-to-net calculator.

  5. 5

    H-10 min: connect

Click the link, accept camera and microphone permissions, wait in the lobby. Check the frame one last time in the preview.

  6. 6

During: speak more slowly, end more clearly

At a distance, sound arrives with a slight delay: let the recruiter finish, pause one second before answering, and end your answers with a clear sentence to avoid overlaps. If you did not understand, ask them to repeat: it is normal on video. Keep notes within eyesight, but do not read.

  7. 7

    After: thank and take notes

A short message within 24 hours (e-mail or LinkedIn): thanks, one point that struck you, your availability for the next step. Write down the questions asked: if a test follows, it usually covers what was discussed.

Tests: what to expect and how to practise

Technical tests

They check what the CV claims. An accountant posts an entry and does a bank reconciliation; an assistant builds an Excel sheet with lookups and a pivot table; a developer solves a timed coding exercise on an online platform; a salesperson simulates a call; a technician reads a drawing or describes a repair. State your real level: an « advanced » who does not know a basic function costs more than an honest « intermediate ». For languages, the company simply switches to French or English for a few minutes.

Aptitude tests

Common in banks, energy, industry and large groups, they measure logic (figure series, dominoes), numerical reasoning (percentages, tables of figures), verbal reasoning (synonyms, reading comprehension) and attention, all against the clock. You improve quickly with practice: do timed sets several days in a row, learn to skip a question that blocks you and come back to it, and read the instructions twice. In the civil service, the tests of competitive exams follow their own regulations, published by the organising administration.

Personality questionnaires

There is no right answer, but there are inconsistent answers. Questionnaires ask the same question in several forms: answer spontaneously, in line with who you really are at work. A « perfect » profile rather triggers extra questions at the interview.

Case studies and simulations

You are given a problem (an unhappy customer, a stock to reorganise, a budget to arbitrate) and little time. The recruiter watches your method: restate the problem, ask two questions, list the options, choose, say what you would do next. Think aloud; a sound approach with an imperfect result beats a result out of nowhere.

The one-way video interview: talking alone to a camera

Some companies send a link to a platform that displays questions on screen and records your answers, with a few seconds of preparation and a limited answer time. There is nobody opposite you: it is unsettling the first time.

  • Practise by filming yourself with your phone on the classic questions (introduce yourself, why this job, a difficult situation). Watch yourself once; correct the pace and the gaze, nothing more.
  • Structure each answer in three beats: the answer in one sentence, an example, the link with the job. Sixty to ninety seconds is enough.
  • Use the free trial that most platforms offer before the first real question.
  • Smile at the start and the end: on screen, a neutral face looks closed.
  • Answers are often watched at speed or by several people: start with the essential.

Your rights and your data

The mistakes that cost a second round

  • Connecting late because the app wanted an update: click ten minutes early.
  • Reading your notes word for word: it shows in the eyes and the tone.
  • Cutting the recruiter off because of the sound delay: one second of pause before each answer.
  • A nickname or a holiday photo as your identity on the platform.
  • Interviewing from a car, a café or the street: noise and a moving picture tire the viewer and signal a lack of preparation.
  • Looking up the answer on another screen during a test: platforms detect window changes, and the next interview checks what the test measured.
  • Overstating your level in English or in a software tool: the test comes right after.
  • Forgetting the time zone with a recruiter abroad.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do the video interview from my phone?

Yes if you have no computer, provided you prop it up (not in your hand), at eye level, in landscape or portrait depending on the app, with earphones and « do not disturb » on. Warn the recruiter if you need to share a document.

What if my connection drops during the interview?

Reconnect with the same link, switch to the 4G hotspot if needed, and send the recruiter a short message (« connection dropped, back in a minute »). A calmly handled drop does not count against you; vanishing without a message does.

Can they ask me to turn my camera on?

Yes, it is an interview. If you have a real constraint (connection too weak), say so from the start and offer audio; do not leave the camera off without explanation.

Can the company record the interview without telling me?

No. Recording your image and voice is personal-data processing subject to law 18-07: prior information and consent. Most tools show a « recording » banner; if you see it without having been told, ask why and what for.

Does a failed aptitude test automatically eliminate me?

Rarely on its own. It is usually weighted with the interview and the technical test, and serves to separate close candidates. An average score with a good interview often passes; the reverse, less so.

I am asked for an unpaid test lasting several days: is that normal?

A few hours of exercise, yes. Real work over several days delivered to the company, no: ask for a written framework (duration, use, pay or agreement). If the company refuses, that tells you something about it.

Should I send my diplomas and ID card before the interview?

Diplomas and certificates, yes if asked, as PDF and preferably marked « copy for recruitment ». ID card, passport, bank details or family record book are provided at contract time, not before, and never to a contact you cannot link to the company.
