« Going up South »: for many Algerian technicians, engineers and skilled workers, it is the fastest way to double a salary. The bases of Hassi Messaoud (Ouargla), Hassi R’Mel (Laghouat), In Salah, In Amenas, Rhourde Nouss, Hassi Berkine and Adrar concentrate the country’s hydrocarbon production and thousands of jobs with Sonatrach, its subsidiaries, its foreign partners and a long chain of subcontractors. But work there follows particular rules: rotation, twelve-hour shifts, life in a camp, hiring that goes through the ANEM with priority for residents, strict HSE requirements. This guide explains how it works, what the pay is made of, which jobs are hiring and how to build a credible application.

Where the jobs are: basins and employers

Algerian oil and gas is concentrated in a few hubs. Hassi Messaoud, in the wilaya of Ouargla, is the oil capital: Sonatrach fields and those of its partners, regional headquarters, the Oued Irara–Krim Belkacem airport, hundreds of service companies. Hassi R’Mel, in the wilaya of Laghouat, is the country’s largest gas field, with its processing and compression plants. The Berkine basin (Hassi Berkine, El Merk, Ourhoud, Rhourde Nouss) to the east, In Amenas and Ohanet towards Illizi, In Salah and Adrar (Reggane, Timimoun) for the south-western gas complete the map. The large liquefaction and refining complexes are on the coast (Arzew, Skikda) and do not fall under the southern regime.

  • Sonatrach and its subsidiaries: the national company (production, drilling, pipeline transport) and the service group around it: ENAFOR and ENTP (drilling), ENSP (well services), ENAGEO (geophysics), ENGTP and GCB (construction), Tassili Airlines (staff air transport). These are public companies: hiring goes through recruitment notices and the ANEM.
  • Foreign partners in association with Sonatrach on some fields, and international oilfield service companies (drilling, cementing, logging, turbine maintenance): usually fixed-term contracts per project, English required, higher pay, sometimes shorter rotations.
  • National subcontractors: industrial maintenance, civil works, piping, electrical, instrumentation, scaffolding, lifting, transport, security. This is the most common entry door for a first job in the South.
  • The camp itself: catering (cooks, waiters, bakers), housekeeping (supervisors, cleaners), site medicine (doctors, nurses), IT and telecoms, warehousing, human resources.

On Chghol, southern offers are grouped by wilaya: see the jobs in Ouargla and jobs in Laghouat pages, and set an alert to be notified of new postings.

Rotation: how work really happens on site

The principle is simple: you live on the base for a continuous period, then go home for an equal or shorter rest period. The reference pattern at Sonatrach and its subsidiaries is 4×4: twenty-eight days on site, twenty-eight days off. Service companies and subcontractors often run denser patterns, 6×2, 6×3, 3×1 or 2×1 (in weeks), sometimes 5×2 for management. On site, the typical day is a twelve-hour shift, day or night, seven days a week: there is no weekend on a base, rest is taken during the time off.

The legal framework remains law 90-11 of 21 April 1990: a legal working week of 40 hours (article 22), which collective agreements may spread differently for continuous or rotating activities, overtime that is limited and paid at least 50 % extra (articles 31 and 32), night work between 21:00 and 5:00 reserved for workers over nineteen (articles 27 and 28), mandatory weekly rest (article 33) and thirty calendar days of annual leave (article 39), plus, for the southern wilayas, extra leave of at least ten days per year of work (article 41). In practice, exceeding forty hours during the rotation is compensated by the rest period and by the work-pattern allowance set in the collective agreement; check that your contract refers to that agreement.

The most common patterns in southern Algeria. The exact pattern, means of transport and accommodation base must appear in the contract or its annex.
PatternWho applies it most oftenWhat it means
4 × 4 (28 days / 28 days)Sonatrach, group subsidiaries, some partnersSix rotations a year; 12-hour shifts; half the year at home
6 × 3 or 6 × 2 (weeks)Service companies, maintenance subcontractorsLonger presence, shorter rest; often on project contracts
3 × 1 or 2 × 1 (weeks)Construction sites, local subcontractingIntense pace; check that overtime is paid
5 × 2 (days), residentManagement, support functions based in Hassi MessaoudHousing in town or camp, no rotation; zone allowance kept

What pay in the South is made of

There is no official « southern salary »: pay is your company’s grid, to which collective agreements add specific allowances. Their sum is what makes the difference with an equivalent job in the North, often double in net terms for technical trades. Here are the lines to look for on an offer or a payslip.

Usual pay lines in the South. Amounts depend on the employer’s collective agreement; no law sets a national zone-allowance rate in the private sector.
LineWhat it pays forWhat to check
Base salaryCategory and step in the collective gridCategory offered, collective agreement grid cited in the contract
Zone allowance (« southern bonus »)Remoteness and climate of the southern wilayasPercentage or fixed amount; paid during time off or only on site?
Work-pattern allowance (rotation)12-hour shifts and continuous presenceCalculation method, whether overtime is included
Hazard and risk allowanceExposure to noise, products, dangerous workTrades concerned, rate applied
Meals, accommodation, transportFood and housing on the base, flights or shuttlesIn kind (camp) or in cash; who pays the home-to-airport leg?
Performance bonuses, 13th monthIndividual or collective resultsAward conditions, guaranteed or variable payment

Two precautions. Insist on a fully declared salary: allowances paid « on the side » count neither for retirement nor for CNAS benefits. And always compare in average monthly net over the year, time off included: a tempting offer computed on the on-site weeks alone can hide an ordinary annual income. Chghol’s Salaries pages give, per occupation, the range observed on online offers when there are enough of them, for example for an HSE engineer; it is a snapshot of postings, not a national statistic. For the discussion itself, our guide to negotiating your salary applies in full, with one nuance: in public companies you negotiate the category and allowances, not the grid.

The jobs hiring in the South

  • Industrial maintenance: industrial mechanics and electricians, instrumentation technicians, automation technicians, turbine and compressor specialists, refrigeration technicians. The bulk of permanent hiring.
  • Drilling and wells: drillers, toolpushers, assistant drillers, cementing operators, mud technicians, well supervisors, wireline and coiled-tubing technicians.
  • Production and process: control-room operators, production operators, process engineers, laboratory technicians.
  • HSE: HSE officers, supervisors and engineers, company firefighters, first-aiders. Regulatory requirements keep this trade permanently short of people.
  • Construction and erection: qualified welders, boilermakers, pipefitters, scaffolders, crane operators and riggers, heavy-equipment operators, site managers, civil engineers.
  • Transport and logistics: truck and staff-bus drivers, warehouse keepers, logisticians, freight agents, truck mechanics.
  • Support and camp: cooks, catering and housekeeping staff, site doctors and nurses, IT and telecom technicians, HR and administrative assistants.

Vocational training diplomas (CFPA, INSFP) are enough for a large share of these jobs, provided they are completed with HSE certificates and site experience. Engineers come from the universities (Boumerdès, Ouargla, Algiers, Oran…) and from Sonatrach’s Algerian Petroleum Institute, which also trains senior technicians.

How to get in: the method in six steps

  1. 1

Register with the ANEM and watch recruitment notices

Employers must declare their vacancies to the national employment agency (law 04-19), and hiring in the southern wilayas gives priority to locally registered job seekers. Register at your wilaya’s agency and on the ANEM online platform, keep your file up to date, and follow the recruitment notices published by Sonatrach and its subsidiaries. If you live in the North, service companies and subcontractors remain your main route.

  2. 2

Get the HSE certificates and medical fitness

No base lets you in without an HSE induction and a fitness medical examination (law 88-07). Even before applying, take a basic HSE course, a workplace first-aid course and, depending on the trade, electrical authorisations, H2S training, work-at-height or confined-space permits, welder qualification to the required standard. List every certificate with its expiry date.

  3. 3

    Work on technical English

At partners and service companies, procedures, work permits and meetings are in English. A level that lets you read a procedure and hold a safety meeting opens better-paid jobs; state it honestly in the CV, it will be tested.

  4. 4

Tailor the CV to the South

At the top: trade, years on site, availability for rotation and the pattern you accept, valid HSE certificates, authorisations, licences, English. Detail the equipment and processes you know (turbine types, compressors, PLCs, welding standards) rather than general qualities. Our guide to writing a CV in Algeria gives the structure; add a clearly visible « mobility: South, rotation » line.

  5. 5

Enter through subcontracting, then move up

The first contract is often with a maintenance or construction subcontractor, on a project fixed-term contract. Once on the base you are visible: service companies and subsidiaries readily hire people already trained on site, medically fit and known to supervisors. Mind your HSE behaviour: a serious breach gets you excluded for a long time.

  6. 6

Check the offer and the contract before leaving

Rotation pattern, assigned base, means of transport and departure point, category, base salary and each allowance, contract length and probation must be written down. Read the cited collective agreement. Our guide to employee rights details what the employer owes in every case: CNAS declaration from day one, payslip, leave.

Life on a base: what to expect

A camp provides a room (often shared at junior levels), meals at fixed times, laundry, a gym, a clinic and an internet connection that is often limited. The climate is the first shock: above 45 °C in summer, sandstorms, cold nights in winter; hydration and breaks are safety rules, not comfort. HSE discipline is permanent: protective equipment, a work permit before every job, daily safety meetings, a total ban on alcohol, access control. Isolation weighs more than fatigue: four weeks away from the family, then four weeks of full presence, require solid family organisation. Women work on the bases, mostly in technical, medical and support roles, with dedicated accommodation. Finally, transport is organised by the employer: flights from Algiers, Oran or Constantine to Hassi Messaoud and the other southern airports, then shuttles to the sites.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to live in the South to be hired?

Not necessarily, but hiring declared to the ANEM in the southern wilayas gives priority to locally registered job seekers. Service companies, foreign partners and subcontractors hire nationwide and organise transport by rotation.

What does « 4×4 » mean in an offer?

Four weeks of continuous work on site, with twelve-hour shifts seven days a week, followed by four weeks off at home. Other patterns exist: 6×3, 6×2, 3×1, 2×1. The pattern must be written in the contract.

How much do you earn in the South?

There is no national grid. Pay adds the company’s grid and the zone, work-pattern and hazard allowances set by its collective agreement, which often places the net well above an equivalent job in the North. Ask for the written breakdown and compare in average monthly net over the year, time off included.

Which HSE certificates are essential?

At least a basic HSE course and first aid; depending on the trade, electrical authorisations, H2S training, work at height and confined spaces, welder qualification to the required standard. The site HSE induction and the fitness medical examination are then organised by the employer, free of charge.

Do southern workers get more leave?

Yes. On top of the thirty calendar days of annual leave (law 90-11, article 39), workers in the southern wilayas are entitled to extra leave of at least ten days per year of work (article 41). Collective agreements may grant more.

Can you work in the South without English?

Yes at Sonatrach, its subsidiaries and national subcontractors, where French and Arabic dominate. English becomes necessary at foreign partners and international service companies, where it is also better paid.

How do you spot a fake oil job offer?

It asks for money (file, training, access card, medical), uses a free e-mail address rather than the company’s, promises a hire without interview or test, or pressures you to sign outside the company. Check the offer on the employer’s official website or with the ANEM before any step.
